Temple of Trade

Fire & Blood

The Temple of Trade in Lys is identified as the setting for the public punishment of Lysaro Rogare, whose sentence made the temple a place where those harmed by his theft could take part in his chastisement. His remains stayed at the site for three years, linking the temple to both the sentence and its prolonged aftermath.

The Temple as a Place of Punishment

At Lysaro’s trial, he laughed when questioned about the gold he had stolen and pointed out a dozen magistrates whom he said he had bribed. The men he identified nevertheless voted to condemn him, keeping the bribes. The resulting sentence placed Lysaro naked against a pillar before the Temple of Trade and permitted those he had despoiled to whip him, with each person’s number of lashes determined by the extent of their losses.

The Sentence and Its Aftermath

Lysara Rogare and Fredo Rogare were among those who took up the whip, while other Lyseni wagered on when Lysaro would die. He died during the seventh hour of the first day of the scourging. His bones remained chained to the pillar for three years, until Moredo Rogare removed them and buried them in the family crypt.

Narrative Significance

The account makes the Temple of Trade more than a backdrop: it is the publicly named site where Lysaro’s financial depredations were answered through a sentence administered by those who had suffered losses. The punishment’s duration extended that reckoning beyond his death, until his remains were finally taken down and returned to the family crypt.
